The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary was not far from our holiday caravan site. It is free to visit and a very popular holiday outing. There are over 500 donkeys at this site. most are housed in fields that you can walk around. Those that need special attention are kept in a large barn that opens onto this courtyard, and those that are well enough take turns to come out and enjoy the attention of the visitors. We were also able to go inside the barn where there is a roped off viewing area and information board. The donkeys' collars are colour coded for their sex and any special needs. The site has plenty of other attractions. They included a shop, of course, where I bought some cards and small souvenirs for the girls; a restaurant; and a maze in which we got thoroughly lost for about half an hour.

This Devon sanctuary was the first in the charity and it has opened a number of others. It also has teams of people working on donkey welfare around the world in countries where donkeys are often abused and need their help.

Thanks Linda. They were such gentle souls. I'm so glad for them they have found a pleasant place to live now.
