Are those house built on the slope of the mountain or hill? I can imagine that the freshness of the air everyday and away from the stress of the big cities. This reminds me of a time when my associates and I was driving up the slopes towards Baguio City in the Philippines. We saw houses built on the slopes along the way too.

Thanks for comments folks.

BK - There is very little flat ground in Madeira so many houses are built on the slopes. It also gets very wet so the water is channelled into enormous dykes to reach the sea. The flowers in the centre are growing over netting that covers one of these dykes.

Jena - Madeira was where we spent our holiday a couple of years ago, when I took the photo. It's near the Canary Islands in the Atlantic close to Morocco, West Africa. The island is very beautiful. I have an article about it, with more pics, published at http://www.europeanjournal.de/index.php?area=1&p=newsarchive&categ=29&PHPSESSID=d6d0934f4ce7c44.

Hi Jena - this is a blogspot theme. I just went to Layout, then Choose New Template and clicked on Harbor. I had been looking for soemthing that didn't wast so much space on either side.
